Vinyl throughout
The most popular type of patio door construction is vinyl. Quality vinyl patio doors are tested against most stringent industry standards for air and water infiltration, wind load resistance, ease of operation, forced entry and energy efficiency. High-end vinyl patio doors assure lower heating and air conditioning bills, easier cleaning, very low maintenance and increased comfort. Most vinyl doors, nowadays, have fusion welded frame and sash corners for added strength of the entire construction.
However, some high-end vinyl patio doors, such as ProVia Endure or Alside Promenade door still feature a mechanically fastened frame corner with combination of seal and gaskets to eliminate air and water penetration.
Due to the traditional classic character of most houses in Connecticut and New England in general, most fenestration products, including vinyl patio doors are white throughout.
Vinyl patio door products from reputable manufacturers feature strong, multi-chamber profiles and either 5 5/5” or 5 3/8” frame depth that offer greater thermal efficiency and increased sound abatement. Additionally, some manufacturers use insulation in the frames.
For example, Endure patio doors from ProVia have Neopor insulation, while OKNA Elegante patio door features EPS insulation (expanded polystyrene).
Yet, another example of vinyl patio door construction is simply pine wood – Alside 6100 Series features solid pine frame wrapped with vinyl frame. Obviously, there are many other patio doors available that don’t have any kind of insulation or wood inside the frames.
