Screens

Patio door screens are available in different construction, operation, and screening material options.

Construction and Operation

Most patio doors in Connecticut have fiberglass screens with aluminum frames that feature an adjustable independent wheel system in all four corners and a controlled, spring-tension system for smooth gliding without derailment.

Top-Hung Screen. Another, unique and uncommon approach is to have the screen suspended by ball bearing rollers, as a “top-hung” aluminum screen such as screens in Sliding Patio doors by ProVia Door Company.

Invent Retractable Screens. Some manufacturers offer screens that disappear into the natural recesses of the frame making them virtually invisible.
This type of screen glides within the rails without wheels or rollers to replace or lubricate. Screen expands upon impact preventing damage or injury. The top bottom tracks contain weather stripping on the inside and outside of the screen mesh to keep insects out. Retractable screens are only available on French and hinged patio doors.

Screen Material Options

Regular Fiberglass Mesh
Regular fiberglass screen mesh is the most common option on any kind of patio doors in Connecticut. It typically feature the regular, standard thread thickness of the mesh, which has the right balance of strength and visibility.

Aluminum Screen Mesh
Aluminum screen mesh is offered by few patio door manufacturers at extra cost.
Aluminum, although much stronger than regular fiberglass, isn’t a popular choice among homeowners in Connecticut.

Fiberglass Micro-Screen
Micro-screens feature a fiberglass screen material that has very fine thread. This technology improves visibility through screen to the outdoors. It also allows more natural light into the home without darkening your patio door area significantly.
Downsize, however, is that this type of screen is the least strong mesh material and most susceptible to damage upon impact.

Below is the comparison of the regular screen with the micro screen.

Heavy-Duty Fiberglass
Heavy-duty patio door screen also know and sometimes called as “Pet Screen” is seven times stronger than traditional insect screening and offers good outward visibility to the outdoors.
This screen is ideal for use in areas with heavy traffic, screen doors, screened porches, patios and porches.
It is perfect for homeowners with pets.

SeeVue Stainless Steel Mesh
ProVia SeeVue is woven from stainless steel, which improves visibility with its fine wire diameter. Moreover, stainless steel screen is much stronger than standard insect screen. SeeVue is an improved visibility insect screen designed to maximize an outward view, making it sharper and more brilliant. It allows superior airflow and meets the high standard of insect protection.
